winter capsule 2015

Winter capsule wrap-up

So I did it! I successfully wore ONLY the contents of my closet as of January 31 for two months! Without buying (aside from in Chicago) any new clothes! That seriously seemed impossible two months ago, so I am quite proud of myself! *all of the confetti horns*

Here is the last batch of outfit pics, along with some random observations and links to anything I'm wearing that is still available online.

This is more of a spring sweater, but I bought it in 2011 (actually, I think my mom bought it for me! LOL), and it is still in heavy rotation in the warmer months!

I learned that I am reeeeeally not good at changing up my jewelry. And if said pieces have sentimental meaning, forget it--I will wear them erreyday. This bow necklace (from the bf) was by far my most-worn, along with my smaller Francesca's watch (January budget), the lavender hamsa bracelet I made last December, and a pair of mismatched studs :)

Rocksbox necklace! Also, this shirt was $5 at Burlington in 2011. High five, Past Self!

I like how this sweater photographed as if it has a sweetheart neckline.

I had hoped to be creative with my wardrobe when I started this capsule. As you can see, that did not exactly happen! The inability to buy new clothes did push me to reach for some tops I don't normally wear (and yet can't part with?), and also kept me from wearing the same super cozy cardigan every day at work (literally every.day.) like I did last winter. But having to deal with the cold/elements in my public transport trek to work every day makes me really reluctant to dress up and break from my (warm!) "uniform" of top, cardigan, jeans. Even the capsule couldn't help me there. Womp.

Favorite outfit of the capsule: probably the one I wore on 2/27, as it breaks the most from my usual uniform! No sweater but instead a blazer plus statement necklace plus M83?! Well done.

Most-worn item of clothing: This green waterfall cardigan (from Target). It's light but warm and basically a wearable blanket. And it's a great color that my closet is seriously lacking otherwise. It was part of my January budget and made an appearance in 3/4 capsule recap posts along the way!

Those awesomely light and warm North Face booties come in second.

Target tees made for a great under-cardigan layering piece this winter, be they Tiffany blue (as above), oatmeal with gold print (as on 2/3 and 3/13), or blue-green print (as on 3/27).

Perhaps it's time to retire this blouse?! Taking pictures of my outfits definitely gave me a different perspective on fit, style, color, etc. I now feel like Cher Horowitz with her distrust of mirrors!

Whoa, a braid?! I wish I had experimented more with different easy hairdos (aside from my favorite, "messy bun with headband").

Even though I didn't get too creative with my outfits, the capsule was a fun project to break up the winter doldrums (and boy, did I feel those!). But I'm glad it's over because that means we're that much closer to spring, and dresses, and bright colors, and WARMTH! Yay!

Capsule update + 10 things you probably don't know about me

Thanks for the idea, Fran! :)

(Unfortunately, it looks like very few of the pieces I'm sporting below are still available. Rats. I did note them, though.)

  • I've broken two bones in my life: my foot last summer, and my thumb when I was five. (It got caught in the car door in the parking lot of Clover, on the day I was supposed to get a Water Baby. *cries*)
  • Logos really freak me out, especially outdated, like, '80s ones. Bradlees has been at the top of that list since I was a kid. The font is so sinister! I still can't look at it, to this day.
Channeling spring! Hurry up and get here!

  • I didn't get my ears pierced until I was 19, and I didn't tell my parents about it beforehand (...because they didn't answer their phones). It is one of my very few "rebellious" acts ;)
  • I cried after the finale of HIMYM. ("How can The Mother be deaaaaad?!")

  • I didn't get a cell phone until I was 18 (and a half!) and interning in Philly.
  • I was an avid watcher of General Hospital in seventh and eighth grade and still love Lucky and Liz (Jonathan Jackson and Rebecca Herbst). <3 <3
  • When I was visiting colleges as a high school senior, I was considering becoming an English/Chem double major and minoring in Russian. WUT. (Yeah, that didn't happen!)

  • Lilo and Stitch is one of my favorite Disney movies. My bffl and I quote it all the time. ("I'm the one they call when things go wrong... and things have DEFINITELY gone wrong!")
  • I was a huge gymnastics fan as a kid (Lilia Podkopayeva 4ever) and actually took gymnastics classes that culminated in tumbling routines at Vet Stadium!
  • The first book I ever read by myself was Duncan and Dolores, in which a spunky little girl smothers her new cat with so much affection that he hides from her and favors her sister instead. A PREDICTION OF MY FUTURE. *wailing emoji*

February 2015 budget

JessComment

I'm so over winter, you guys. I need sun! I need warmth! I'm basically a wilted flower at this point--I almost forgot to do this post! My anxious brain has been quick to jump in and sabotage my plans lately, and I've been too wilted to tell it to fuck off. At least until now!

Surprisingly, my budget did not take a huge hit from all of these feels. Aside from a Sephora blow-out, I did not shop away my emotions. And I only bought ONE accessory and NO clothing this month!!! I am so proud of myself (and genuinely shocked) that I stuck to those parameters, especially considering previous months' purchases! I did, however, sign up for a few subscription boxes. (I have a love-hate relationship with them typically. I get all excited about them and then pause my subscription after like two months lol.) I signed up for Rocksbox with Style on Target's code for a free month (woo-hoo!), Birchbox (how have I not tried this yet??), and Fabletics (mainly because it was 50% off and I'm looking for a comfy pair of leggings for yoga)! I'm sooo curious to see how these boxes turn out and am currently stalking my tracking info. There may be a review post in the future...

I was also supposed to try the envelope system this month, and I must admit, I didn't stick to it. There's just so many things that are easier to pay online that cash is really not super realistic for ALL of my spending. But trying to budget with the envelope system did get me using Mint.com again, which has been VERY helpful (and eye-opening).

Ok, so here are this month's purchases. It's pretty much all shoes and Sephora :) :

image.jpg

  1. Dior Addict Lip Glow (HUGE splurge, but I'd been curious about it for awhile, and after testing it at Sephora and feeling its luxuriousness, I couldn't resist!): $33 (Sephora)
  2. Nike Match Supreme polka dot sneakers (I saw these on the Nordstrom Rack Instagram and basically became the heart-eyes emoji): $70 on sale for $55 - $25 gift card = $30
  3. Hinge Sheldon boots (which I had liked online about a month ago and then accidentally found in the Nordstrom Rack clearance section!): $150 on sale for $55
  4. North Face Thermoball bootie (basically a replacement for Blowfish boots that I wore into the ground and had to toss last fall): $80 - $75 coupon from my Sorel debacle = $5!!!! (Zappos)

Not pictured:

  1. Josie Maran Infinity creamy oil: $28 (Sephora)
  2. Josie Maran exfoliating cleansing powder: $40 (Sephora)
  3. Merona scarf (I mistakenly thought it was this season's B/W blanket scarf, but I'm prob better off with a normal-length scarf cuz those are way easier to style! You can see it in the 2/26 outfit below): $5 (Ebay)

Total: $196

Remaining in quarterly budget: $161 (Can I really stick to that for TWO MONTHS?! We shall see!)

Favorite purchase: Hmm, probably the North Face boots, because they keep my feet dry, are ridiculously light-weight, and look like normal, somewhat cute booties, not big ol' clunky snowboots!

Least favorite purchase: Possibly the Dior lip balm, just because it was such a splurge!!

Linking up with Franish's Budgeting Bloggers!

And here are my outfits from the past two weeks! Like I said, it was not a great time with the ol' anxiety/depression, so no elaborate post outfit post here, although I did note where you can find exact pieces that are still available! (I'm kind of thrilled that so many of these outfits included older purchases!)

February 1-15 outfit recap

Jess2 Comments

It's kind of hilarious and surreal that I, of all people, am writing about fashion and taking pictures of my outfits and posting them online. Like, what? I was never the fashionista growing up. I wore a Catholic school uniform for 12 years and always had a kilt of tasteful length! I didn't start wearing makeup until two years ago! My body was not something to dress up or show off--it was just the vehicle that got me to class, that got everything checked off my to-do lists. Yoga has helped me to inhabit my body again, so I'm having fun dressing it now, rather than just trying to hide it (and myself) and blend in.

image.jpg

Onto the capsule! It's actually been pretty interesting thus far, even though I don't wear polished and profesh outfits like Katie and Fran. Sadly, that's just not realistic for my job and lifestyle. I take 8 modes of public transportation a day, often in a polar vortex, to a job with no dress code. So as much as I love fashion, my primary concern in winter is WARMTH, and since it's so cold/icy/wintry mix-y, I've been wearing skinnies and snow boots (then changing into my ancient Uggs at work) pretty much every day, which is why the bottom half of my outfits are not really documented. I definitely need to branch out beyond my winter uniform of a sweater and skinnies, and I also need to incorporate more of my accessories, but there has already been a huge win since the capsule/shopping ban started: I have yet to buy any new clothes! *confetti horn emojis*

Oh, also, I really hope to take awesome outdoor DSLR pics soon, but with this weather, slapdash selfies will have to do. Done is better than perfect!! :)
