I like to keep these posts as sparkly as possible, but it also feels weird not to speak honestly about how I’ve been feeling, so here we go. On this week’s edition of the Grief Emotional Rollercoaster, we made stops in Numbness Knoll and Depression Downs! FUN! Basically, I just want to be snug in my bed watching Supernatural con videos. But I had done a ton of feeling last week, so maybe it’s natural to feel burnt out after something like that? On the good news front, the suicidal thoughts have been almost nonexistent (hooray!), and I came to several conclusions about them: a.) they’re just thoughts—I don’t have to believe them or get worked up about them and b.) I know I’m not going to act on them even if I do have them.

You know what has been bringing me genuine joy amidst the numbness? Blogging! So let’s get into this week’s sparkle:

  • On Saturday, I went to Ulta and got a mini-facial at a Tula event, which was so.nice. I got a lactic acid treatment, and though I was legit scared for my sensitive skin, it went well, and my skin felt incredibly soft afterward! Bonus that Timmi texted me during my facial, which means I got to say, “Sorry I missed your text, I was getting a facial!”—probably the bougiest thing I’ve ever said!

  • Later that night, I lit this candle for the first time! It smells sooo delicious and pairs well with the cooler weather that we’re suddenly getting!

public.jpeg
  • Pops was around on Sunday, so we went to the mall together! Aww! I love my dad, but we do live together, so we can drive each other nuts at times, haha. But Sunday was such a fun little outing! And, you guys, I DIDN’T BUY ANYTHING! (It was just one of those times when everything looked ridiculous or didn’t fit blah blah.) Even though shopping was mostly a bust, we had a delish lunch at The Cheesecake Factory, and I got to show Pops around some of my favorite stores at the mall near work, which isn’t something I usually get to share with people.

  • I was feeling especially down on Tuesday night, but a mix of Supernatural con vids and these guys brightened my mood!

  • Lastly, I give you the perfect tweet for anxiety-addled English majors! #tooreal

Before we get into the sparkle, let me just say that anxiety is a helluva a thing. I had a BAD anxiety day on Wednesday, and man, did it pull me under quick. Like I mentioned in this post, I sometimes have fleeting suicidal thoughts sort of out of habit (I can’t think of a better way to describe it), and that started happening because I was just.so.anxious. When I feel truly awful, this old voice in my head will start telling me that there’s a way out. Luckily, I have enough awareness now to go like, “Wait, what?! Where did you come from?!” and dismiss it. But I had forgotten just how horrifying an intense bout of anxiety can be. (My usual anxiety feels more like a nuisance than a WHY GOD MAKE IT STOP kind of thing.) People typically equate suicide and depression, but anxiety has certainly fueled my serious suicidal thoughts in the past, and I don’t think I’ve emphasized that quite enough on here.

This is all to say, be kind out there. You don’t know what random, seemingly benign, things are setting people off. I certainly didn’t see it coming on Wednesday! And I’m doing better now, whew! ❤️

ANYWAY, the sparkle!

  • On Saturday, one of my friends came over so we could start watching Dawson’s Creek. (Well, sort of. He’s seen it all, and I watched seasons one and two back when they first aired.) I forgot how much they threw into that pilot! Children out of wedlock, affairs, interracial couples, student-teacher flirtations… 1998 didn’t stand a chance! Also, even though it was about 80 degrees on Saturday, I really wanted a hot chocolate, and let me tell you, it was a fine accompaniment to the Creek!

public.jpeg
  • My friend also brought me a gift! How awesome is this?! And he apologized for it not being Ocarina of Time! (I do love Link to the Past too though!) Get you a friend who knows your Zelda preferences!

public.jpeg
  • Every so often, I just need some eye candy in my life, and so I get back on a Supernatural kick. I am usually firmly a Jensen Ackles girl (how is he so stupidly attractive HOW?!), but I am falling prey to Jared Padalecki’s giant puppy energy IRL and sad puppy energy as Sam. (Plus, he’s open about his anxiety and depression and I swear he once name-checked the DSM at a con, so what could be more attractive?!) The only problem with Supernatural is that I have no real interest in the supernatural, so I just end up watching videos from cons or the same handful of “fun” episodes (Bad Day at Black Rock, Tall Tales, etc.) that I’ve seen a million times. If anyone watches it, I need episode suggestions!

(Thank you tumblr!)

  • I did a little redecorating over the weekend with these awesome tarot-themed prints from Society 6! I LOVE that Virgo is the The Hermit! I feel that in my SOUL.

public.jpeg
  • Lastly, it’s been almost a year, and the Queen deep dive continues! This time, I have two words for you: acapella Queen! I especially love the harmonies on “Killer Queen,” which I hardly noticed before!

That is… a lewk. 👀

What put the sparkle in your week?!

Hope you have a great weekend! xoxo

Well, it’s been a strange time since I last checked in. Yes, I spent last week in Sedona, Arizona, as planned, but my dear friend Kristin passed away the Sunday before I left. So it’s been a strange mix of grief and jet lag and deep inner healing work. There were definitely sparkly moments in the past week, but everything feels exhausting at the same time. I guess that’s grief. Anyway, here’s what brought the sparkle:

  • This is my favorite picture of me from Sedona. We did a hike to the energy vortex on the Airport Loop trail and then had the option to hike around the area as we wished. Two of the other girls and I opted to go to the summit, where we got to soak in these gorgeous views!

public.jpeg
  • The next day, we went to Boynton Canyon, where we encountered the Flute Guy, who climbs to the top of this rock and plays his flute twice a day. He also handed each of us a heart-shaped rock on his way up there! ❤️

public.jpeg
  • On our last day, Saturday, we did the most difficult hike of our time in Sedona wherein we literally crawled and pulled ourselves up rocks to get to this point on Bell Rock. I’m now covered in bruises and still feeling muscles I didn’t know I had, but I did it—and I definitely didn’t think I’d be able to! I felt very accomplished! 😊

public.jpeg
  • We also had time to explore the town of Sedona, where I bought quite a few crystals and got my aura picture taken!

public.jpeg
  • Lastly, I never really adjusted to the time difference and kept waking up at 5 AM, so I’d just go outside and watch the sun come up every morning! Seeing the sun rise over the red rocks was a treat every day, but the last morning was especially gorgeous:

Let’s see what put the sparkle into this week!

  • Saturday was a beautiful, sunny, not too hot day, so I went to Longwood Gardens! My hope was to see all the dahlias that Timmi and I accidentally found there last year, but I only saw a few different types this time around. I don’t know if they bloomed earlier this year, or if not as many varieties were planted, but no matter the reason, HOW DARE THEY. Luckily, the Conservatory is always lovely and had me appreciating plants for a change, instead of just focusing on flowers!

I fell in love with these fuzzy, stabby friends!

And how ridiculous is this rubber plant? YOU LOOK LIKE YOU’RE PAINTED HOW.

  • Oh, and there were some dahlias, and other pretty flowers, don’t worry!

  • I kind of hate myself for saying this, but I’ve been on a real T. Swift kick for the past week. Her songs are just.so.catchy. Even a cranky old lady like me (hee hee hoo hoo hoooo oooh) can’t resist! Not gonna lie, I basically listened to “You Need to Calm Down” all day on Friday! *I* need to calm down!

  • Please tell me that you can relate to this. 🙃🙃

Sadly, the joggers are going back (I was not impressed), BUT I did order a jumpsuit that I hope is as comfy as a onesie, so STAY TUNED.

Sadly, the joggers are going back (I was not impressed), BUT I did order a jumpsuit that I hope is as comfy as a onesie, so STAY TUNED.

  • Lastly, this post was suggested for me on Instagram (well done, algorithm!), and it honestly gave me great comfort. I tend to be Attachment Barbie with people in general, and if I’m being vulnerable and sharing the intimate details of my life with someone, like, say, a therapist, forget about it. Attachment City. But I always struggle with the idea that therapists care about me too. I want to believe it, but it’s so hard since it’s their job to be there for me, and I tend to feel like a burden. So this was super reassuring, and I’m sharing it for anyone else who needs to hear it.

What put the sparkle in YOUR week?

No H54F next week because I’m going to be in Arizona on a retreat with some of my yoga friends! Hope you have a great weekend! xo

Let’s see what brought the sparkle this week!

  • I had an Ulta gift card from my birthday, so on Saturday… and Monday shhh… I stopped by Ulta and treated myself to a few fun things that I would normally talk myself out of, including nail polishes, lip glosses, and this cat ear headband that was basically made for me! 😻

Zoya Nail Lacquer | Essence Lash Primer | Dr. Jart Cicapair Color Correcting Treatment (this is actually from Sephora and I think it’s going back because it has an orangey cast on me, boo)

  • But even more exciting than all that is that the adorable cashier on Saturday gave me the best compliment of my life: “Your style is so cute!” SQUEEEE! I may never get over this. I was the gawky, nerdy girl growing up, so getting this kind of compliment truly made my heart soar! 💜💜

  • I didn’t have any plans for the Labor Day, so I made the aforementioned trip to Ulta (and one to Target, on the day before everyone went back to school—DO NOT RECOMMEND), watched a lot of FYI’s Grey’s marathon, and sat outside typing up notes for this story I want to write. I rarely give myself permission to just sit and work on creative writing, so that was a nice change of pace! All in all, a very chill holiday.

  • I loved this Positively Present illustration, especially since September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month!

  • Lastly, Timmi shared this musical masterpiece with me, knowing that I listen to “Jolene” almost every day at work! (With my own flaming locks of auburn hair, I cannot resist!)

Let’s see what brought the sparkle in my birthday week!

  • It’s VIRGO SEASON now, so on Sunday, I went to an astrology gathering to talk all things Virgo! (Obviously, I am a Virgo haha.) I had never pulled up my whole birth chart before, so it was very educational and a fun way to spend a Sunday night!

  • Wednesday was my actual birthday, and Pops and I made the last minute decision to go to NYC! We were hoping to go to the Met to see the Instruments of Rock exhibit, but that didn’t end up working out time-wise, so we walked the High Line (this super cool elevated train line converted into a park) and went to the Chelsea Market instead. Luckily, the rain held out, donuts were obtained, and we had pretty fun day!

I’m loving this Target romper I got with one of my birthday gift cards!

  • On Wednesday, I also posted what may be my favorite installment of #SparklePunchMusicMonth: Zelda!! Representing my love of ‘90s video game music. ❤️

  • Rings are probably my favorite accessory, and I treated myself to two new ones for my birthday! (Along with my fave nail polish color, Illamasqua Jomina!) I found the square one at the Chelsea Market and the geometric half-moon one on Etsy!

public.jpeg
  • I pulled this celestial queen from the Magic Neko deck that Timmi got me! She symbolizes nighttime, dreams, and creativity!

  • And let’s end with one last nod to Virgo season! 😂

Let’s see what brought the sparkle this week!

  • We’re heading into the last week of #SparklePunchMusicMonth, so post your pics on Instagram if you want to join in! We’d love to have you! I have so enjoyed seeing everyone’s posts, especially this one from sweet Mica! I never expected other people to want to join me on this fun little journey, so having company has been a wonderful treat! ❤️

  • I was pretty happy with this outfit I threw together for my fam birthday dinner on Saturday night! The tank was a thrift store find in like 2011, the shorts were $3 at Primark, and the headband is from Claire’s! Oh… and I own a fanny pack now. My January self was not ready for this! At least it’s a super cute rose gold one, and I think this is how you’re supposed to wear them these days? (I promptly texted this to Timmi and was like, “AM I COOL YET?!” 😂😂)

public.jpeg
  • Did you guys do anything to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Woodstock?! Pops and I watched some of Day 1 on Saturday. Check out this hunk. Can you believe he gushed about his newfound interest in tie-dyeing during his set?! 😂😍

public.jpeg

This put me on a Lovin’ Spoonful kick for the rest of the week, and I ain’t mad about it!

  • I picked up a few things from Ulta this week too! I had miraculously resisted the Lanolips stick (!!) when I went to get my eyebrows waxed on Saturday, but I do love Lanolips, so I could only hold out for so long. And I already have the Yuni My Om World body mist from Target and really like it, hence picking up their Carry Om rollerball. This is the first time I had seen more of their line somewhere, so I was pretty psyched! The Carry Om scent is more energizing than the grounding/calming spray, so they’re a nice combo! I put this rollerball in my work bag and have been using it for a mid-afternoon pick-me-up!

Lots of sparkle to report this week!! ✨✨

  • On Saturday, Timmi accompanied me to therapy (LOL) and then we picked up some DELISH donuts and headed down the shore! It was SO MUCH FUN. We did ALL the Ocean City things: played mini-golf, walked on the beach, got friendship bracelets (sort of), played skee ball, took photo booth pics, and got HENNA TATTOOS (I’m not kidding 😂). We basically ate our way down the boardwalk too!

I’ve driven down the shore twice before by myself, but I tend to be so racked with anxiety once I get there that I don’t stay for very long. This time, I stayed for a solid five hours, did ALL THE THINGS, and had a blast! Everything is better with Timmi! 💕💕

How cute are Timmi’s sunglasses?!

Oh, I literally licked the leftover icing out of the box… and I usually hate icing… 😳

  • The henna tattoos get their own section, haha! In my pre-shore-trip therapy session, my therapist urged me to do a small, possibly rebellious thing. Something that I wanted to do for me. Enter me getting tiny sun and moon henna tattoos because I’m apparently sixteen years old! 😂 Timmi (who has several real tattoos) decided to get a moon tattoo too! How cute! 👯‍♀️ I don’t know that I’m ready for a real tattoo, but I do really like these ones… and matching with one of my besties! I love moon imagery in general, and I liked combining it with the sun for a “this too shall pass”/”the sun also rises” kind of visual. 💕

  • On Sunday afternoon, we dragged our exhausted selves (we seriously walked five miles on Saturday!) to a local crystal shop and pored over their wares for a few hours! These were my spoils:

Louise Hay affirmation cards | Rainbow aura quartz (I think?) heart | Chakra rainbow candle

The shop is right in this cute little downtown area, so we also stopped for a delish all-carb lunch! 😂

public.jpeg
  • Afterward, we went back to Timmi’s, where we did a Philly Tarot reading and then played Secret Hitler with Timmi’s fam! What a night!

public.jpeg
  • Lastly, these are the bracelets I got in Ocean City. Some sixth grader probably made them, haha, but I think they’re so cute and cheery! The pink and purple one is also sparkly, so that felt on-brand for To Sparkle Punch. And I love the song “She’s a Rainbow,” so I couldn’t resist the pretty rainbow one! (Rainbow is definitely the vibe these days!) Bonus that they remind me of Timmi + all the fun we had AND that they don’t clang on my desk when I’m typing! 😂👵🏻 (It’s the little things!)

Let’s see what brought the sparkle this week!

  • Saturday night was the Queen concert, and it was AMAZING!! Brian May and Roger Taylor IN PERSON!! Adam Lambert is quite the showman, and, by his own admission, more like a Freddie surrogate than a replacement, so I like him even more now. ❤️ I was a little surprised they didn’t do more deepish cuts (since I’ve spent the past 9 months on a Queen crash course, haha—I WAS READY!), but overall, the setlist was great: everything from “Bohemian Rhapsody” to “Radio Gaga.” They even threw in a few songs I didn’t expect, like “Hammer to Fall” and “‘39” (the latter of which I totally fangirled over!). They were really rocking, so “Love of My Life” was a particularly quiet, tender moment:

Bottom line: You should totally go see them if you have the chance. Pops wants to go again!

  • During the day on Saturday, I taught my one yoga student and rocked these awesome pink leggings, which Pops though I’d be wearing to the concert! (“Freddie would approve!” LOL I guess they are on par with his harlequin bodysuit lewks.) I had seen them at Primark before, but now they’re marked down to $5, so I couldn’t resist. I don’t love bold leggings, so I really appreciate how these just give you bold calves only! 😂😂

public.jpeg
  • I posted two more entries to #SparklePunchMusicMonth this week: the Stones and Darren Criss! Can you believe I saw those two concerts in a one-week span?! I especially love how my Stones pic turned out. Thank you Pops for having lots of gear for me to use as a prop! 😂 I also somehow managed to position the camera juuust right to hide all the extraneous junk in our living room! 💯💯

  • On Tuesday afternoon, Timmi got back from Ireland, so I went over to her house and picked up some furry co-workers! Tuesday is my work from home day, so I hung out with Timmi/ate weird European gummies and worked while she couch melted after a 12-hour delay at Heathrow on her way back from Ireland. 😵

public.jpeg
This is very ideal 😂

This is very ideal 😂

  • Lastly, on Wednesday, Timmi and I got to work on the little textile project I’ve alluded to in a few posts: attaching Stay Home Club patches to some t-shirts and sweatshirts! This one is obviously my fave:

Let’s see what brought the sparkle this week!

  • GUESS WHO’S GOING TO SEE QUEEN!!! Last weekend, Pops presented me with his credit card and instructions to buy tickets. DON’T MIND IF I DO! I wish it were full Queen, but seeing as that’s impossible, half of Queen will certainly do. I’ve been back on a Queen kick recently too, so this is perfect timing! I can’t believe I was never more into them pre-BoRhap. I mean, they’ve got everything you could ask for: pretty, cutesy love songs, songs to psych you up to rip an elephant in half, disco dance party songs…. 🕺

  • On Sunday, I had a belated National Ice Cream Day celebration with my lovely adopted family (Kristin’s) while she got some reiki.

Chocolate Cookie Crunch YUM

Chocolate Cookie Crunch YUM

Then, her sister ended up doing reiki on me, which was a wild experience, as always! (Like, she’d be working on my head, and I’d feel it in my hands nbd.) The biggest fan of the reiki, though, was Sharkey the cat, who soaked it up and promptly passed out under the bed for a good long while!

  • I mixed things up this week and actually went TO THE MALL on Thursday night! How wild! Who even am I?! I went to Lush because I needed more of Let the Good Times Roll (I ended up falling in love with it after getting that sample in June), but I also wanted to try a body lotion, so I picked up Sleepy, which feels very luxurious annnd makes me basically smell like Lush, haha!

  • If you follow me on IG, then you already know that Sparkle Punch Music Month is underway! Music is such a huge part of my life, and my self-care, that it inspired me to focus on music instead of just documenting my OOTDs this August. So I took pics in some of my fave band/concert tees! I started working on this in July, so it’s already been a really fun creative outlet for me! If you want to join in, please do!! I’ve already got Bri on board (YAY!!), and she’s posting about her favorite songs, so Music Month is whatever you want it to be! I’ll be posting intermittently throughout August, so it’s v lowkey—join in whenever! Just be sure to tag me so i can check out your posts! @jessie_face4 #SparklePunchMusicMonth ❤️❤️

  • Lastly, I saw this on Alyssa Tabit’s Instagram, and man, it hit me right in the feels. So true and yet so hard to remember!

Let’s see what brought the sparkle this week!

  • I knew that Pops had seen Queen back in the day (alone no less, because no one wanted to go with him! FOOLS!), but I didn’t recall ever seeing a ticket from that show in his collection of old ticket stubs. Well, as I sifted through them this weekend, I figured out why:

public.jpeg

The name got ripped off! UGH! But he’d told me he’d seen them at the Erlanger Theater (with Kansas as an opening act no less, how hilar) and that “Killer Queen” (from Sheer Heart Attack) was their big song at the time, so I did a little detective work:

public.jpeg

I’m so jealous that he got to see Queen in their true form, WAH! (Their last US tour with Freddie and my beloved John Deacon was in ‘82, and I was born in ‘86, sooo sad trombone for me.)

  • The CVS gods blessed me with a whopping NINE DOLLARS in Extra Bucks, so I picked up another NYX Powder Puff matte lipstick on Friday. I’d gotten “Squad Goals,” a v pretty pinky-nude, back in the winter, and found that the puff applicator makes it super easy to use (which is what I always need with make-up LOL). This time, I picked up a bolder shade: “Pop Quiz”!

I’m a model, you know what I mean, and I do my little turn on the catwalk…

I’m a model, you know what I mean, and I do my little turn on the catwalk…

  • After yoga on Sunday, I stopped by Home Goods for a few things to finish up organizing the ol’ boudoir. Here’s what I got:

💜super pumped that I found a set of string lights with PURPLE clips💜

💜super pumped that I found a set of string lights with PURPLE clips💜

  • On Wednesday, I got to see my beloved Timmi before she left for Ireland! We had a wild night of CVS and dinner, haha! (We each got NYX eyebrow pencils, so we are clearly living our best lives.) While in therapy last week, I had remembered that Timmi was going to be in town, and I literally yelled out, “WAIT TIMMI WILL BE HERE!!!” in the middle of sharing an unrelated thought—so get you someone you’re that excited about having in your life! And to prove her amazingness, LOOK WHAT SHE BROUGHT ME! At first I was like, “Aww, that’s pretty, it’s flowers!'“ But’s not just flowers—IT’S FLOWERS AND CATS!!!!!! Aka two of my favorite things!! HASHTAG BLESSED.

public.jpeg
public.jpeg
  • Lastly, here’s something that is not exactly sparkly… and something that I’ve been hesitant to talk about because a.) it’s not sparkly, not to mention possibly triggering and b.) I don’t want to make someone else’s experience all about me. But it also feels weird to keep consciously talking around it on here. So… here goes.

My dear friend Kristin is nearing the end of her journey with cancer. She posted this on Instagram this week (FYI: it’s not graphic or anything but could be triggering given the subject matter), and I was just like, “Look at this bad-ass.” Like, in a world of fake beauty and overly filtered/edited posts, she’s keeping it real—even in a stage of life that most people have a hard time acknowledging. Reading her powerful post made me feel like Eric’s dad in Sex Education, except “Maybe I am learning from my brave friend.” 💖💖💖

Let’s see what brought the sparkle this week!

  • On Saturday, I lost my mind and started tearing my room apart, specifically my closet and bookcase, which were complete disasters. I just put on some Samantha Ravndahl vids and went to town purging stuff, re-organizing, and dusting. Now, being in my room actually feels almost relaxing!

This is an “after” pic of the closet and a “before” pic of everything else!

This is an “after” pic of the closet and a “before” pic of everything else!

  • One of the other things I organized over the weekend was an overflowing accordion folder of photos. Not only did it look frustratingly disorganized, but it was also bending my photos! Not cool!

image1.jpeg

I had already sorted and categorized the pictures, so I didn’t want to just dump them in a box. Enter this colorful organizer from Michael’s! Cute and functional? Sign me up! It worked out perfectly!

public.jpeg
  • I’ve inadvertently been working through my collection of Zoya Pixe Dust polishes, and I can’t recommend them highly enough, especially if you think you’re “bad” at painting your nails. Since they’re textured, you don’t even need a top coat—just slap on two coats of the Pixie Dust, give it a little time to dry, and then it looks amazing for a solid week. Also, Pixie Dusts aren’t at all hard to remove, unlike typical glitter polishes. “Tomoko” is a forever fave, but now I’m in loooove with “Stevie.” Lavender glitter?! Could there be a better Sparkle Punch color?! I can’t believe it took me so long to finally wear it!

image2.jpeg
  • On Tuesday, I went out on a school night (*gasp*) when Pops and I went to the Phillies-Dodgers game! Baseball really isn’t my jam, but Pops loves the Dodgers (and all things California), so here we are. The game was sort of dull (aside from the Phanatic, of course) until a brief rain delay + lead change in the ninth inning. At least it’s always nice to soak up the ambience at CBP!

  • Last Friday was my last day with Pudge. 😭How am I supposed to leave this precious angel?! At least we got to nap together one last time before I left!

public.jpeg
Although Pudge has no trouble napping by herself!

Although Pudge has no trouble napping by herself!

  • After I woke up from my nap, Karuna and I went on a Target run! Having company at Target for a change was just delightful! Bonus that we pregamed with some delish truffle fries at a nearby restaurant!

public.jpeg
  • On Saturday, I taught restorative yoga for the first time, and it went really well! Restorative intimidates me so much as a teacher since you need to use a bazillion props and be able to help your student if their body doesn’t feel great in the cookie-cutter prop set-up (which is forever me). But I did some research the night before and was totally fine in the moment! Also, before getting all zen and chill, we danced it out to “Sheer Heart Attack” by Queen, so I was clearly living my best life, haha!

  • True confessions time: my shopping has been WAY out of control this month. I’ve definitely been relying on that dopamine rush and then getting frustrated with myself for spending more money; it’s a vicious circle. I have an idea why this is happening (which I’ll maybe talk about on here at some point), but it still feels totally out of my control. In light of this, I decided to talk to the teacher who subbed for our yoga class on Sunday. I knew that she does workshops applying principles of addiction to other issues, like procrastination, so I thought, Why not shopping? She was so sympathetic and sweet and knowledgable, and she encouraged me to be kind to myself during this rough patch, which is so hard for me to do. But ultimately, I really needed someone to talk to, and I’m so appreciative that she was willing to chat after class!

  • Lastly, when Karuna and I celebrated the Fourth of July at Whole Foods (just like George Washington himself), I picked up this peppermint-scented hand sanitizer, and I am IN LOVE. It smells amazing and is so refreshing in the summer heat that I was basically spritzing myself with it all the way home from Reading on Saturday. And I pretty much used it like smelling salts on my terrifying drive home in a monsoon last night! What more could you want?!

How was this simultaneously the longest and shortest week ever? Oh, holidays, never change. Let’s see what brought the sparkle!

  • If you couldn’t tell from my one million Insta Stories about her, I’ve been watching Maggie’s cat Pudge, aka living my best life! After my first post, Timmi said, “Very excited for all this Perf Velvet Loaf Content™️ that you’ll be providing us with during this visit,” which is how you all should feel, FYI. 😂😂 JUST LOOK AT THIS PRECIOUS ANGEL:

It’s actually been an emotional rollercoaster of a week, so having Pudge’s companionship has really been a godsend. No matter what I’m doing, she just wants to be snoozing next to me or aggressively head-butting me for pets (#bless), and it has really helped me to feel less alone amid the craziness of life. IS THIS WHY PEOPLE HAVE PETS?! 🤯😂

  • Maggie lives with Karuna, one of the other gals from yoga teacher training, so I’ve been able to spend time with her, which has been a delight. Karuna is so hilarious and insightful, but she also sees me (moi?!) in that way, which is so sweet and life-affirming.

  • I did my first pull with my Philly Tarot Deck over the weekend when I picked a card for July! As you can see, I got the Eight of Pentacles. Even with three years of car ownership under my belt now, I guess I can never be rid of Septa, haha

  • Oh yes, here is my latest accidental haul, the Ulta one I alluded to in my June Budget post. I went to get my eyebrows waxed, mentioned my biggest skin concerns (redness and dark circles), discovered that they had the Kylie High Glosses in stock (and in non-glittery shades!!), so it was all downhill for me! At least I had a coupon for 20% off my entire purchase?

  • Lastly, my all-time fave beauty YouTuber Allana Davison has introduced me to the magic that is Samantha Ravndahl, and I’ve spent the week bingeing Sam’s videos! She’s so funny and honest and relatable and quite a lot different from the stereotypical “beauty influencer.” I think her “What’s in my bag?” vid has been my favorite so far. (I mean, I love those kinds of videos/posts anyway, but hers is pretty hilar.)

“Everyone watching this is like, ‘Okay, cool, so I could have gone through my own bag for the same experience.’ Oh, here we go! Okay, I have thirteen crumpled receipts!”

Hope y’all have a great weekend! xoxo

High Five for Friday: June 28

It was a pretty slow week around these parts, so here’s the randomness that brought the sparkle!

  • When I visited Kristin on Sunday, we (and her mom—hi Sue!) were trying to figure out what our most played songs are in iTunes. Apparently, this is mine! I don’t know why I’m surprised, since my love of “You’re My Best Friend” long predates BoRhap fever!

Aww, check out Deaky on the piano! ❤️

  • I wasn’t feeling great on Sunday, but eating about half a sleeve of saltines (WHY ARE THEY SO DELICIOUS?!) and going to yoga restored my health, and I had a sudden craving for a smoothie after yoga. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Luckily, the studio isn’t far from a Robek’s, and I happen to know that their Polar Pineapple is delicious!
IMG_9664.JPG
  • That night, I took Pops out for part three of his Father’s Day gift—a trip to Handel’s, his faaaavorite ice cream place! (In case you’re wondering, part one of his gift was a Van Halen mix, and part two was a white towel to replace one I accidentally stained with a face mask WHOOPS.)
IMG_9665.JPG
  • Here’s a funny moment from work. For some reason, when my computer goes into “hibernate” mode, it seems to fall into a coma. This happened on Wednesday while I was working with my co-worker to figure out an app-related mystery. As I tried to resuscitate my computer afterward (the tower was still on, but it kept telling me “Monitor going to sleep” AHHH), all I could think of was this classic Sesame Street sketch wherein two (stoner-sounding) kids try to “wake up” a plant, and hijinks ensue:

Plants need water, maaan!

  • Lastly, buckle up for PUDGEPALOOZA next week because I’m going to be spending the next week with the world’s greatest emotional support cat/velvet loaf! 😍❤️😫

Let’s see what brought the sparkle this week!

  • Inspired by my drive to Delaware, I drove to another state on Saturday! Granted, it was only New Jersey, which I’ve driven to before, but I still got to experience the thrill of the Google Maps lady saying, “Welcome to New Jersey!” 😂 ANYWAY, my ultimate destination was Occasionette to pick up the Philly Tarot deck! (Timmi has it, and it is perfection.) So I got that, along with a few cards, and walked around for awhile, swooning over the cute wares!
😍😍

😍😍

IMG_9510.JPG
  • I also spent a little time outside after I got back home on Saturday night, and while I was reading more of my Nicky Hopkins book, who came running out from under our porch but THIS SCAREDY CAT! Whoooo are you? (who who, who who)
IMG_9516.JPG
  • On Sunday, I was the only person who signed up for yoga, so I got to pick what we did. I was like, “Umm, can we have a random restorative class?” which was delightful. I’ve been sooo tired lately, so just laying around in different supported poses was 💯.

  • On Tuesday, I went on an accidental flower tour of Philly! (This is the upside of parking a mile from my psychiatric nurse practitioner’s office, haha.) LOOK AT THESE BEAUTIES!
IMG_9512.JPG
IMG_9515.JPG
Timmi thinks these are delphiniums, which seems like it might be accurate? Any thoughts? All I know for sure is that I’m in love with them!

IMG_9514.JPG

This was a lovely prelude to meeting with my psych NP, because she is a dream come true. A patient, compassionate practitioner of psychiatry has, sadly, been hard for me to find! (I’ve had much better luck with therapists!)

  • Lastly, I had a LOOONG overdue reunion with my dear Maggie (aka Pudge’s mama!) on Thursday! This gal is a true gem. Whenever I’m with her, I feel less crazy and alone because she just gets everything I’m going through. I know the phrase “(someone/something) gives me life” is so overused, but being with Maggie truly does give me life! Our level of genuine, authentic connection is something I really treasure. Bonus that, when we were leaving, Maggie invited me to come visit with her and Pudge over the summer, and I yelled (across the parking lot, no less), “I’LL BRING MY TAROT CARDS!”, to which her immediate response was “YASSSS!” ❤️👯‍♀️

Hope you have a great weekend! xo

Let’s see what brought the sparkle this week!

  • On Saturday, I had a long overdue haircut (which you got a play-by-play of if you follow me on IG!)! I swear I got some length taken off! 😂 It takes a good hour of sitting under the dryer to get my hair... somewhat dry (#thickhairprobs), but I really relish the time to chill and read trashy magazines! My hairstylist asked me what kind of magazines I’d like to read, and I was like, “The dumber, the better!” 😂👍🏻
New hair, who dis?

  • I also went on an accidental shopping spree! 😬 There’s just too many good stores near the salon!

Okay, the face mask was actually something I ordered two weeks ago, but it arrived last  Friday, so yolo. And I definitely didn’t realize that what I thought was a little trinket dish was actually an ashtray! Oops! But it’s super cute and obviously on brand with my moon-and-stars obsession, so, perfect! It makes a fine ring dish, I must say!

IMG_9409.JPG

Other initial reactions: The cute Empress sticker went right on my laptop, I love the simplicity of the little Virgo medallion, and the Ohaii lip gloss is pretty thick and great!

  • I saw some other fun sign-related thangs that I miraculously didn’t buy! I’m a Virgo, duh, and Timmi is an Aries. Apparently, those two signs are totally incompatible, but STARS BE DAMNED—we’ve been going strong since 2001, baby! 👯‍♀️
Okay, but Timmi only does ride shotgun tho….

I COUGHED NOW I’M DEAD #tooreal

  • On Sunday, I hung out at Kristin’s and was the fifth wheel for dinner (since her parents and bf were there too). When I said that, though, Kristin’s mom—sweet angel that she is—replied, “Oh, you’re family!” just very matter-of-factly! I could have cried! How adorable! I do regularly beat Kristin and her bf’s ears about Nicky Hopkins, and what is family for if not to semi-tolerate your weird interests?! 😂😂

  • Lastly, this quote got through to me more than encouragement about being positive seems to. All the bright colors probably helped too!

Let’s see what brought the sparkle this week!

  • Last Friday marked THREE YEARS with my lil’ babydoll car! (Can you even believeeee?! Especially if you’ve been around since the exposure therapy days!) And on Saturday, I drove to my second state ever: Delaware! HOW EXCITING, RIGHT?! 😂😂 Okay, yes, Delaware really isn’t far at all (this trip was like 50 minutes total), but there’s something about the idea of driving to a DIFFERENT STATE that feels very momentous, haha. Bonus that we were going to a grad party, so I got to be all dolled up! (Although this dress obviously qualifies as Secret Pajamas™️ because you know that’s how I roll.)

I would link to my dress and sandals, but they are both sooo old! Like, from 2013 and 2015 respectively!

  • On Sunday, I had a bit of a “treat yo self” trip to Lush! Timmi and I stopped there when I was in Chicago, and I picked up the Sleepy Face cleansing bar, which I really like. But it’s a pretty small bar, so I wanted to see what else Lush had to offer. Enter Ultrabland and (a sample of) Let the Good Times Roll!

FullSizeRender.jpg

Ultrabland is a cleansing cream, so it feels very luxurious and is also really moisturizing… like, to the point that I don’t have use a separate moisturizer. Anything that allows me to be lazy is 💯. Let the Good Times Roll is a bit odd—it has a Play-Doh-like consistency until you mix it with water. But it smells amazing (kind of like cake?!), and it’s exfoliating, so I like the idea of using it intermittently. And they gave me quite a generous sample, so thanks, ladies of Lush!

  • Oh yeah, another car breakthrough: I went to the car wash on Tuesday after putting it off for months! 👏🏻 Does the car wash give anyone else anxiety? I mean, there’s usually a crowd, and you have to squeeze your car into the line, and people are yelling at you and telling you where to go, and ultimately I JUST FEEL OUT OF CONTROL AND I DON’T LIKE IT. But I survived! Pro tip: Go on a Tuesday at noon!

  • Buckle up for a musical geek-out moment! You might not know Nicky Hopkins by name, but you probably know his gorgeous piano-playing on songs like “Angie,” “She’s a Rainbow,” and “You Are So Beautiful.” I am a total nerd who loves finding out which session musicians played on songs, and Nicky is my fave of faves. So I’m currently reading this book!

IMG_9193.JPG

I could never quite understand why Nicky, with his immense talent, was only a session man. I had heard he’d had health issues (possibly Crohn’s Disease, which was a definite YOKES back in the ‘60s), but the book has put it all into perspective: when Nicky was 19, his health issues landed him in the hospital, were he was bedridden for almost TWO YEARS! He had 14 surgeries in that time! Like, Keith Richards was amazed he even survived… KEITH RICHARDS!! (And how is he still alive?!) Uh yeah, now I can see why being a session musician and not traveling with a band would have been super ideal!

  • Lastly, here’s the Positively Present illustration I picked for my phone background this month:

I seriously love how her images are always so bright and cheery! It’s almost enough to make the idea of change palatable! 😂😂

Hope you have a great weekend! xo

This week was much better than last week (WHEW), and having that extra day off for the holiday was splendid! That seriously brought the sparkle!

  • On Saturday, I made yet another stop at Ulta (SEND HELP) and then dropped by Kristin’s for Caturday night with Schitt’s Creek + this guy! (Sharkey is really the star of To Sparkle Punch, let’s be real.)

just casually touching me with his tail 😭😭

  • On Sunday, I got to pick up this lovely Om bracelet after yoga! (As I mentioned in my Budget post, I tried to buy it last week but didn’t have enough cash oops.) I think it’s a fine addition to my “arm party”! (Is that still a thing??)

IMG_8994.JPG
  • I also got to spend some time outside over the weekend, first with an impromptu nature walk through our neighborhood, and then with some writing time!

What is this?? 😍 I need to start walking around with a field guide!

  • The caption says it all! 😂 YAY (almost) SUMMER!

IMG_8928.JPG

This was my get-up for the ol’ saltines-and-soup Target run after I randomly got sick on Monday. (This also explains the Gatorade above. #blessed)

  • I had been flitting around the house tidying things up on Monday, but in an attempt to slow down after getting sick, I parked myself on the couch and watched some Sex Education. I finished season one awhile ago, but I’m still in love with Connor Swindells… and Maeve’s hair. 😍😍

True confessions: this has not been a very sparkly week, friends. A lot got stirred up in therapy on Saturday, and it kind of sent me spiraling. To the point that I was walking around in an utter daze and having very dark thoughts… which only added to my angst as I was like, “AH! WHAT IS GOING ON? I THOUGHT I HAD A HANDLE ON THIS!!”

Luckily, this intense, emotional period only lasted about three days.

I’m starting to think that, at least for me, as much as my tendency toward dark, suicidal thoughts can go into a sort of “remission” as I develop other coping skills, because suicide-as-a-way-out is how I’ve coped in the past, my mind sometimes leaps back there if I become very scared and overwhelmed. So I’m trying not to beat myself up too much for it, or wring my hands like “WHY IS THIS HAPPENING WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME AHHHH.” I felt a lot all at once, I really hate feeling, and I had a brief period of darkness. That progression makes sense. THANK GOD I have enough awareness now to know that dark thoughts can and will pull me under very quickly, but that they’re ultimately just thoughts—I don’t have to listen to them. And my emotions will stabilize in time. Stormy days pass.

IMG_8798.JPG

ANYWAY, here are a few specific things that got me through:

  • Connection. Text with a friend about the “Lido Shuffle” and Tim Tams. (True story 😂) Go to therapy. Help a friend with a lip balm emergency. (Unfortunately, said friend had taken a nap by the time I got to her house with the lip balm, but she woke up while I was there chatting with her bf, so I got an “Are you in my house??” text—a hilarious first.) All of these things helped me to feel infinitely less alone in my whirling thoughts. And when I have darker thoughts, I’m usually feeling very alone, so this was clutch.

  • Go to yoga. Although I go to yoga every Sunday, I was not psyched this week because we had a sub, and I always feel weird about that when I’m in an emotionally raw state. (I feel so awkward crying in class when I don’t really know the teacher!) So I tried to “warn” her about this possibility beforehand, and she reassured me that it was totally fine, welcome even—setting the tone for a really great, calming class.

  • Pet an animal friend. This actually happened pre-therapy meltdown, but the video sure made me smile afterwards! This lil guy was even friendlier than the cat I saw a few weeks ago! What a cutie! He literally ran up to me, rubbed up on me, rolled around, and then bolted, ignoring everyone else in the parking lot! Considering the emotional meltdown I proceeded to have in therapy, it got me wondering if he sensed that I needed him, almost like how those trained dogs can recognize when their owner is about to have a seizure. In any case, there’s like 80% chance I’m gonna come home with a cat one of these days! Or that my therapist, who has never seen any of these cats, is making notes like, “Ok, Jess is seeing cats now…” 😂😂
  • Journaling and therapy. You guys know these are just a *chef’s kiss* as far as I’m concerned! An hour of journaling was honestly the only thing that calmed me down on Saturday night! My writing was, at times, more negative and spiraly than I would have liked, but for the most part, it helped me to make sense of my feelings and, as a result, I felt calmer and less crazy! And even though therapy is what started this whole episode, and led to me being very withdrawn in Tuesday’s session, when we met again on Thursday, I was finally able to speak to the vulnerability under all the darkness and reflexive pushing-away. Considering this all played out with my male therapist (who thankfully has the patience of a saint), it was a real breakthrough for me.

  • A small treat. I’ve gotten much more disciplined with my shopping habits over the past five years of budget posts, so I was shocked by how impulsive I was over the weekend—it was like the pleasure centers in my brain were screaming to be fed! WILD. As a result, I couldn’t talk myself out of a few unnecessary purchases, one of which was a candle at the yoga studio. However, lighting my candle has given me something to look forward to every day, and the lemon scent has helped to ground me in the present. (Plus, the whole experience convinced me to steer clear of stores for the rest of the week!)
FullSizeRender.jpg
  • BONUS SIXTH THING: The triumphant return of Self-Care Nails! Not only is it just fun to have pretty nails, but it takes a good 30-45 minutes for me to paint my nails, and you have to have some degree of presence and focus to do it without being sloppy. So it was almost like a meditative act, in the sense that it pulled me out of my thoughts for a bit.
IMG_8813.JPG

So that’s how I got through a rough week. What do you do in these stormy times?

Hope you have a great weekend! xo
