Outfits of the month (August 2017)

JessComment

You know, I used to post more than just H54F. But for whatever reason, this year, I just haven't been able to motivate myself to blog much.

For instance, I've enjoyed documenting my daily outfits on here for the past two Augusts, but I knew that I wouldn't be able to get myself to edit and post pictures in weekly batches, as I had in the past.

Enter Instagram.

I was actually energized at the thought of posting my outfits on there every day (rather than letting the pictures pile up), so I decided to do that instead. Sometimes, you just need to find an alternative, instead trying to force yourself to do something you're not super interested in (which usually ends in not doing it at all).

An unforseen bonus to using IG was being able to talk to y'all in real time! I so loved seeing all of your likes and comments, and getting to talk about clothes and girly things on work days! (I have two coworkers, and they're both dudes, sooo...)

Here are a few of my favorite outfits from August! My job doesn't have a dress code, so most of my outfits consisted of jeans or leggings plus tees. Nothing too exciting. But the Lindsay kimono helped me to break up the monotony!

Lindsay kimono: LulaRoe by Dre Lydon (2017) | Tank: Gap (thrifted 2011) | Jeans: Gap (2014) | Sandals: Target (2017) | Belt: Loft (2014) | Necklace: Stella & Dot (Poshmark 2017)

I would never normally pair a kimono with dressy shorts, but I LOVED this look! I felt so sassy in SoCal!

I love a boxy shirt and skinny jeans, and this thrifted Aerie tee has been one of my faves lately!

I wouldn't normally pay $55 for, well, any clothing item, but this Carly is so cute and comfy! I just love it! (Accessorizing with an earhat optional.)

I tend to wear things I love to death, and this romper from 2015 is still a summertime staple. Such a great, comfy piece! (Also, one of my friends recently suggested wearing a bralette under a romper, to avoid that pesky bathroom nudity issue, which is GENIUS.)

My flight home got in at 12:30 AM, so I seriously had no effs left to give when dressing for work. Which made me brave enough to wear a dress and Chucks! (I had totally forgotten about this dress in my closet, and it is sooo comfy. You might remember it from this post.)

So Outfit Documentation August is a wrap!! Here's what I wore:

25 Tops (includes layers like tanks and cardigans)

13 Bottoms

10 Accessories

5 Pairs of Shoes

4 Dresses/Rompers

That seems like a good amount of the items in my closet! I know I would have mixed in more skirts and dresses if I didn't have physical therapy, or the need to wear sneakers most of the time. I also know that there are a bunch of items (mostly tops) in my closet that I repeatedly skipped over, like, "Ugh, I don't want to wear that," so maybe it's time to part with those pieces...

Since I also took daily outfit pictures last August, it's been really interesting to see that I wore 13 of the same articles of clothing this time around. I guess I've made some wise purchases, ha!

This is probably my favorite go-to outfit. I just feel like such a rock star in it! In fact, it's the outfit I wore (minus the Chucks) when I bought my car because it makes me feel all cool and confident. :)

LOVE these jeggings, even though they don't really fit, hence the belt. (I only ever wear a belt when my pants would literally fall down without it nbd.)

Whew, it's been tough getting back into the swing of daily outfit pics! I hope to use my DSLR more as the month goes on, but this is real life, and iPhone shots on the fly were all I could manage for week 1!

Btw, I just want to make clear that I do use ShopStyle affiliate links whenever possible. This means that I get a few pennies per click. I think I've made like $2 over the past six months, so I'm not Scrooge McDuck over here rolling in the dough or anything; I just wanted to be open about it, since there are a lot of links in these types of posts.

Fifty shades of purple

JessComment

Well, here it is: my Easter finery! I actually planned to wear something else on Easter Sunday, but I made a game-time decision for this outfit instead, mainly because it incorporated fleece-lined tights. #realtalk I can't even remember the last time I wore this dress, but I liked it a lot better this time around. (Look at those pleats! How cute!) I remembered it being way boxier than it apparently is, ha.

In other news, purple is my favorite color (surprise!), and boy, did I rock it for Easter!

My friend Piper and I always say "purple is a neutral" because we want to (and do!) wear it with everything! :)

This Old Navy cardigan is so boring, so basic, so perfect. It's soft, and I can throw it on with about a million outfits. Who could ask for anything more?! The plaid H&M coat might be one of my best buys ever. I scored it for $20 in August five years ago, and I still reach for it when I want to be a little dressy in the colder weather. And then my ring! It's the one I got at the Renegade Craft Fair in Chicago last fall, and I love it so so much. It's the only ring I wear every single day, aside from my high school ring! I linked to the shop on Etsy, but it doesn't look like this exact ring is available anymore. Rats! I will say that Cheyenne, the artisan, is awesome and actually made me this ring (the rose gold wasn't available in my size at Renegade) and then mailed it to me, so maybe she can work with you if you're interested in one of her pieces!

Let the sunshine in

JessComment

(My dad was telling me that it's the age of Aquarius again? "You mean, the moon is in the seventh house? And Jupiter aligns with Mars?!" All I know about the Age of Aquarius, I learned from the 5th Dimension #preach. And I have no idea where Pops heard this/if it is actually the age of Aquarius. My astrological knowledge consists of googling "Is Mercury in retrograde?" whenever my life is weird, lol.)

Wow, it's been awhile since I've done an OOTD post--my last one was before Christmas! Yikes! I sure was productive back then.

Considering I'm consistently more depressed in the winter months, I've begun to think that I suffer from SAD, at least on some level. February has been better than January, but I've still been really unmotivated. Enter sunshine and 60 degree weather this past weekend, though, and I was practically doing cartwheels! (I now realize that this was a prime opportunity to dance joyously to "Let the Sunshine In" ala The 40 Year Old Virgin, rats.) I got so much done! I took outfit pics, and bugged the neighborhood cats, and went to both yoga AND Trader Joe's (and I am legit scared of the latter because it's always insanely packed)!

Here are said outfit pics, wherein I revel in the warm weather and chase the light around my backyard!

Plus, it has that cute back detail! Did you ever notice how hard it is to look cute while taking a picture of your back? Well, spoiler: it is! Sexy back is hard to come by, believe me. I guess that's why JT was so deadset on finding and restoring it. ;)

I think this is a cute quietly (and casually) festive outfit, what with the plaid, the sparkle, and the boots. I would totally wear this on Christmas, since I only get "dressed up" for Christmas Eve Mass.

And since we're getting into the spirit and all, here are two of my favorite Christmas ornaments! How cute are they?!

Pretty sure my grandmother's bestie, a crocheting goddess, made this ornament back in the day.

How awesome are these wooden 12 Days of Christmas ornaments?! At one time, we did have all twelve... now we only have three. :(

As this is my last post before the big Christmas day, I wanted to share the mantra I'm using this holiday week. It's something that Sheryl of How to Make a Life said in response to my comment on her Grief, Stress, and the Holidays post. It's also very approp because I realized in EMDR last week just how many of my current fears are fueled by bad memories. My feelings toward Christmas and New Year's (I almost typed "New TEARS" which is hilariously more accurate!) certainly fall into that category. My default is to think negatively, so words like Sheryl's are a great relief to me--the reminder that when things are awful, they won't continue that way forever. So I wanted to be sure to include this for anyone else not psyched about the holidays. <3

I love you all and wish you the merriest Christmas (or non-Christmas or whatever you want it to be!)! I'll be back next week with my budget post, 12 Months of Bliss recap, and High Five for Friday! :)

Please go chasing waterfalls...

JessComment

(TLC and I are just on the same page lately...)

You know how you have items in your closet that you just reach for over and over again? (Sticking to the rivers and the lakes that you're used to? Ok, I'll stop!) Well, here are some of mine. Although I claim to not be into green, I LOVE this sweater. It's a great fall/winter shade, plus it's super comfy. (Bonus that I can dramatically throw the "waterfall" part over me like a blanket!) Then there's the black shirt with ruffles. YOU GUYS. I found this shirt at a consignment store like three years ago, and I'm still all heart-eyes emoji over it. It's basically a t-shirt (although a bit thicker), BUT it has the whole ruffle deal going on, which dresses it up a bit. While I wore this exact outfit to lunch with one of my old work pals a few weeks ago, I simply switched up the jeans and boots and wore it again to Thanksgiving! (It was really beautiful here in Philly that day, sunny and 60+, so I didn't even need a coat!)

What I Wore Wednesday, sponsored by the money-flying-away emoji!

JessComment

I am not one to advocate paying full price for clothes/accessories, especially not now that I'm trying to get my act together with spending! BUT. Sometimes you have to take the plunge... especially if you're at Target (with a gift card, no less!), not Nordstrom! :)

Back in September, I was looking for a comfy, cozy, waterfall sweater or jacket for my Chicago trip. Of the three items I tried on at Target, the black jacket below was the most expensive option at $30, but it was also my favorite. It's a perfect light layer that looks more pulled-together than a hoodie while being as comfy as one. So rather than settling on something I felt meh about, I got the full-price jacket. Now it's making the rounds from Chicago to work to my yoga retreat last weekend!

Speaking of layers, the temperature in Philly has been jumping from like 40 to 70 in a day, and sister can't handle the 40s without bundling up for the Antarctic. So I had to bust out my (enormous) Madewell Transport Tote last week to transport (ha) all of my usual crap AND a blanket scarf and hat at the end of the day!

How hilarious! So that's what the shirt has been known as ever since. (Case in point: when I sent Timmi a pic of this outfit, her reaction was "Casual cat!!!") Because said cat looks pretty hefty, "casual cat" has also become a unit of measurement, as in "Sharkey, Chuck, and Ike would weigh 1.5 Casual Cats!" :D

What I Wore Wednesday: Some things old, some things new

JessComment

When I tried taking cute, outdoor pics of this outfit with my DSLR, it was a total fail. The camera kept tilting forward mid-shot and then the battery died. UGH. So super-glamorous iPhone bathroom shots it is! :) That's how proud of myself I was for assembling this outfit. Wearing a skirt just makes me feel more pulled-together, and I never know what to do with my chambray shirt, so being able to create a cute outfit with BOTH pieces felt like an accomplishment, haha.

Button-down: BP by Nordstrom (sold out; 2015)

Skirt: Old Navy (2015)

Shoes: Converse for Target (2008!!)

Necklace: Geovista Pave Collar Necklace (Chloe + Isabel; 2015)

Watch: Target

Bracelets: Lokai and wooden beads (from a vender at Renegade)

Tights: ancient (LOL)

I am in love with this Old Navy skirt. I was initially concerned about the island print (doesn't "island print" just sound horrifying and garish?) but found it to be pretty tasteful and abstract in real life. That, combined with the dark backdrop, makes it seem pretty fall-approp to me. The necklace is awesome too--a great, subtle statement piece. (Reminder that you can pick it up from C+I here using my October code "Ginger's Jewel Soiree" at checkout!)

Although those are new pieces, I also worked in tights that I think are from high school (and were probably purchased by my mom LOL) and Converse flats that I bought with my bffl the day before she flew home for fall break 2008. HOLY MOLY. That was our senior year of college--I spent most of the break studying for the GRE Subject Test in English Lit! (*insert scared minion gif here*) And right after fall break was my bffl's b-day so we went to a Flyers-Sharks game, and the Phillies won the World Series a few days later. One perk of wearing older pieces is that they sometimes clothe you in heart-warming, long-forgotten memories too. <3

Modcloth love

JessComment

(It gets me to the church on time...?) ;D

Considering that 90% of Modcloth's wares are totally adorkable (quotation mark earrings, anyone??), the site seems to be "right up my address," as Pops would say. Yet somehow, I'd never bought anything from them... until now! This dress, called "Sparklers and Recreation" (!!) is basically perfection: made of comfy jersey material, it's also short-sleeved, an approp length, and a neutral pattern. It's exactly what I've been looking to add to my summer wardrobe! I fully expected to have to return it (since I had no experience with Modcloth's sizing), but it fit like a dream! I was so surprised that I promptly accosted Pops for a second opinion. ("This fits, right?! It doesn't look like a nightgown, right?!")

image.jpg
I'm not thrilled with the color/clarity of this pic, but it was the only ok full-length shot. Rats!

Dress: Modcloth (2015) (and now even cheaper than when I bought it!)

Necklace: Target (2015)

Nails: OPI, "Pussy Galore"

Also, let's talk about this Target necklace. It was one of my gift card purchases last month, and I've already worn it a handful of times. It's just that perfect pop of sparkle that goes with everything! For less than $20 (and I scored mine for less than $10--check the sale rack!), it's a no-brainer!

If you guys have bought from Modcloth before, please let me know your fave finds, now that I'm hooked! Personally, I'm eyeing these dresses, these boots, these tasteful (!!) cat earrings, this skirt, this bag..... ;)

Summer clothes make me feel fine

JessComment

With my favorite season coming to a close (and bringing on cold weather, UGH), I thought it would be a good time to look back at what I wore, what I liked, and what I learned over the summer. I have all these outfit pictures now, so I might as well use them as data! Getting dressed can be annoying and sometimes makes me miss the days of my Catholic school uniforms. But aside from passing frustration, do we ever analyze what we like and dislike about what we wear? Do we ever stop and think about which shapes, colors, textures make us feel our best (or not)? I sure don't, even though doing so would probably make my life easier and help me to create a fun "uniform" of my own.

With that in mind, I revisited the outfits I posted on the blog over the summer and came up with five favorites, so that I could see what they had in common. (I limited myself to everyday outfits because, while I love my fancier summer looks, I'm not going to wear them to work or, more importantly, to Target!)

image.jpg
image.jpg
image.jpg
image.jpg
image.jpg

Here are some things they have in common:

  • Pops of color
  • Neutral patterns
  • Fun necklaces
  • Interesting shapes (like boxy tops with streamlined bottoms)
  • Blues and greys

The fourth outfit above (the black and white romper) would seem to be the best example of my "uniform": a neutral pattern with pops of blue, thanks to a fun statement necklace and pretty cardigan.

But what about things I dislike? To deter me from buying cute things that I just won't wear, I started keeping the thoughts below in mind when I shop. It's really helped deter me from impulse purchases that will inevitably be disappointments. To thine own self be true, right? ("That Polonius guy said it!")

Here is the list of summer things that I now know I just won't wear:

image.jpg
  • If I have to wear a different bra so that I don't look like a slob in a particular a shirt or dress, it just won't happen.
  • Similar to #1, although I mainly feel awkward with my bra inevitably showing, and then I don't feel like I can take my sweater/jacket off.
  • WHY. Why do these exist? Short-sleeved sweaters just don't work for people who are cold all.the.time.
  • If it's 90 degrees, the last thing I want to do is layer, no matter how cute the end result is.
  • I'm not tall enough to rock a midi skirt and flats, and I don't wear heels on a regular basis.

Before, I would shop all willy-nilly and buy anything, especially styles and colors that I didn't have in my closet... but there was a reason they weren't in my closet: I didn't actually like them or feel comfortable/confident in them! Now, armed with the above tips and insights, I am working on curating a functional, workable closet of things that make me feel good. :)

Have you ever analyzed your clothes, outfits, wardrobe to find what works and (what doesn't) for you? Has it helped you to streamline your closet or keep to a budget?

What I Wore Wednesday: September 2

JessComment

Strike up the Traveling Wilburys 'cause we are at the end of the line! I always dread a month (or two) of outfit chronicling, and then, when it's over, I'm like, WAIT... what am I supposed to wear now?! It's also interesting to see how little I actually wear in a month, even when I was supposedly making better use of my closet. But I have more notes on that, and a full recap, after this week's ensembles. (Two words: PURPLE SEQUINS.)

Wednesday 8/26

image.jpg

Button-down: Nordstrom (2015)

Tank: Gap (2015)

Leggings: Athleta (2015)

Shoes: Toms Bennet (2015)

Necklace: Chloe & Isabel (2015)

Watch: Target

Bracelet: Lokai

Sunglasses: Kate Spade (prescription!)

Thursday 8/27

Fun fact: When I shoot with my tripod in the morning, I do it on this tiny, raised stone slab just outside our back door, and our back door kind of springs open. So many safety hazards. Well, on this day, Pops kept coming out to talk to me, and the door opening would startle me, so I have several awesome pics of my back or side as I jumped out of my skin just as the camera timer went off. Quiet on the set, people!!

Skirt: Urban Outfitters (2013)

Friday 8/28

Birthday ensemble! If wearing sequins on my birthday is wrong, then I don't wanna be right! Pops was concerned that I was wearing sequins at all, let alone before noon ("You look like Tina Turner's back-up dancer!"), but hey, I was working from home. Plus, birthday! IF NOT NOW, WHEN, POPS?!

LOL what is this pose??

Saturday 8/29

All dressed up for dinner with B and my parents! I love this dress on the hanger, but I never know what to do with it. Do I belt it? Can I wear a necklace with it? Is it too baggy? I decided that I had to wear it (for the first time ever!) if I were going to keep it... and I STILL don't know how I feel about it! Ugh!

Ooops, I stayed in pjs all day!

Monday 8/31

I'd been envisioning this outfit ever since I bought the skirt! In case you were wondering, I saw Elton John in 2013, and it was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. (Should I be concerned that "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" was one of my favorite songs in seventh grade??)

You can't plant me in your penthouse, I'm going back to my plow.

And thus concludes Outfit Documentation August! Here are the other outfits I wore during the month, and installments one, two, and three!

Total Number of Items Worn: 53

Most-Worn Items: Blue Old Navy Tami Tank (3) and Gray Old Navy Cardigan (3)

Favorite Looks: Obviously the blue H&M dress I wore to the wedding, but also the black and white Old Navy romper, blue crop top + blue pleated skirt, and my "semaphore" dress with grey jacket. (That poor dress is covered in strings--it is seriously going to fall apart!)

Least Favorite: The chambray button-down + leggings that lead off this week's post. I liked it on but felt it looked kind of meh and dowdy in pics :-/

I definitely used more of my closet/accessories than I normally do (hello, sequin dress I hadn't worn in three years!), and I also realized which areas I need to cut back on (tops and shorts!) and which ones I could expand (casual dresses and skirts, neutral cardigans). And in the entire month, I only bought one article of clothing, the (super comfy) blue Old Navy circle skirt, which I'd been eyeing since the spring, on major sale. Huzzah!

Thanks for following along with me all month! :)

What I Wore Wednesday: August 19

JessComment

Since I recently discovered Confident Twosday over at Why I Do Declaire, I thought I'd kick off this week's WIWW post with a note about how my own confidence is evolving, especially in regard to clothes and appearance.

Growing up, I did not have a very accurate idea of how I looked. I was 4'11" by third grade and got stuck in this mindset of feeling really tall and awkward, even though most of my classmates quickly caught up to or surpassed me. I wore a lot of hand-me-downs as a kid and was oblivious to how things fit. (This was the '90s, so you can imagine how attractive I looked!) The more covered up, the better! Jeans in summer? Yes please! Plus, for 12 years, I spent every school day in a uniform--"what should I wear" only crossed my mind every few months on a dress down day. But then, COLLEGE. Not only could I suddenly wear whatever I wanted, but I had a job for the first time and the freedom to buy my own clothes. And yet I still farmed out the "what should I wear" decision to someone else when possible, enlisting my bffl to pick out my outfits! Graduation forced me out of that habit, and I began to grow and develop my own style.

So while I post "outfit pics" on here, they are much more about the girl in front of the lens, who is finding courage and finally starting to feel comfortable coming out of hiding and doing what she wants, dressing how she wants, exploring what she wants, and posting what she wants. This space here draws me out of my shell. And I hope you, dear reader, have a space/outlet/hobby that allows the same.

Plus, taking outfit pics lets an ordinary girl of average height play model! And not only model but all the parts of a "photoshoot": stylist, set designer, photographer (sometimes). It's a fun creative exercise--and much better than picking apart all the reasons why I can't be a real model! :D

OKAY, that's enough feels for one day! Moving on to this week's pics...

Wednesday 8/12 (the day I re-discovered the sock bun--celebrate good times, come on!)

Happy August, month of my birth and self-proclaimed "No Shop August"! Since I can't buy anything, I decided to start taking daily outfit pics again. When I did so last winter, it really helped me to be creative and use more of my closet. Ye olde creativity hasn't exactly kicked in yet, though, as most of these Week 1 outfits have already appeared on the blog! I have a problem with re-wearing the same exact outfit if I really like it--hopefully I'll get out of that rut by not wanting to take pictures of repeat outfits over 31 days! :D

Oh, do you like my sweet new accessory of a wrist brace? I found out last week that I have tendinitis in my hand, probably caused by clutching the steering wheel for dear life! Oops! All those years I was afraid being on the road with other drivers, I should have been afraid of injuring myself! ;)

I'm the keymaster

JessComment

Last Thursday, I drove to work, and then had the strangest thought later that day: I can go somewhere. I can LEAVE during lunch. I could even investigate this Nordstrom Rack that is allegedly not too far away!

In the two years that I've been at my job, I've only gone out to lunch on days when my co-workers are celebrating something. There's just not much within walking distance. But I must say, once the idea of taking the car out began to bloom, anxious thoughts popped up like weeds to choke it down: "You don't NEED to go out. What if something happens? What if you get into an accident? You don't even know where you're going! THIS IS MADNESS." I do tend to have almost OCD-like fears with driving, like I'm pushing the envelope and something bad will happen if I drive, since driving is not fully necessary (i.e., one can exist without driving). Some form of these fears is responsible for my lack of driving over the past ten years.

image.jpg

But not on this day :) (What do we say to the god of death? NOT TODAY!)

Three months ago, I'm not sure which idea would have been more laughable: driving to work alone or driving someplace completely unfamiliar on a whim. And while both scenarios produce some degree of anxiety these days, it's not crippling. I'm not its slave anymore. For anyone debating the grueling work of exposure therapy, that is the payoff. And it is so very rewarding.
